In the months leading up to the 2024 election, we talked to voters in states where the election could be decided by a razor-thin margin. They lived in suburbs where immigration was a potent issue, in rural areas facing housing crunches and in cities battling crime and disinvestment. Regardless of party, they expressed a deep sense of distrust in their government and institutions. But they also had deep pride in the place they called home.
